The Global Spiral Membranes Market was valued at USD 6.70 Bn in 2020 and is expected to reach USD 13.50 Bn by 2027, with a growing CAGR of 10.2% during the forecast period.

Global Spiral Membranes Market Definition

Spiral membrane is made of number of envelopes, it consists of two membrane sheets which are separated by a permeate spacer mesh which are intact to a central permeate collection tube. As spiral membranes have compact layout and high membrane area per element and are well suited for high-flow applications with small or no suspended particles. They have low maintenance and operating costs. Spiral wound membranes are a densely packed filter media in which a permeable membrane is wrapped in a spiral fashion around a central core, much like a roll of fabric. The permeable membrane is sealed around the edges and gapped with a spacer material, allowing the filtered liquid to pass through.

Global Spiral Membranes Market Dynamics

Increasing demand for spiral membranes from the food & beverage sector is anticipated to drive the spiral membranes market growth throughout the forecast period. Spiral membranes are used to concentrate vegetable extracts, to clarify and de-colour natural sugar solutions and starch derived sugars, and others.  Additionally, membranes can be used in clarification, dealcoholization, preparation for bottling, removal, and recovery of microorganism. Hollow fiber and a tubular MF membrane are successfully used for clarification. Additionally, RO membranes and osmotic distillation are used for dealcoholization in a laboratory scale. For instance, Alfa Laval uses membrane filtration for dealcoholization in which the modular designs require no major capital investment.

Additionally, government measures to provide water to citizens is expected to foster the demand for spiral membranes during the forecast period. For instance, in Australia, the government has established the National Water Grid Fund, programme which is backed by USD 2.5 billion rolling 10-year infrastructure investment. The government has included funding for new and expanded projects in its fiscal year 2021-22 budget.

Based on type, the polyamide segment is expected to grow significantly during the forecast period due to its easy availability & economical price

Based on type, the market has been segmented into fluoropolymers, polyamide, polysulfone & polyethersulfone, and others. The polyamide segment in spiral membranes sector accounted for the largest market share in 2020 and is expected to grow significantly during the forecast period. Polyamides are used in oil wastewater treatment by RO membrane filtration process. For instance, in 2018, global consumption of vegetable oils reached 197.33 Million Metric Tons (MMTs) with an annual production of 203.83 MMTs

Based on the application, the water treatment segment in the spiral membranes market is expected to hold the largest market share during the forecast period owing to increase in demand for water

Based on the application, the market has been segmented into food & beverage, healthcare, water treatment, oil & gas, and others. The water treatment segment held the largest market share in 2020 owing to rapid urbanization & industrialization that has led to increase in demand for water. Therefore, to meet quality standards water is treated by using various technologies to remove water pollutants. The rolled nanofiltration membrane technology has been widely used in the transformation of drinking water softening and purification treatment processes. The rolled nanofiltration maintained a stable and reliable treatment effect in long-term operation. For instance, Veolia, a water treatment organization owns a technology in which used two hollow fiber nanofiltration tests are done.

Based on region, Asia-Pacific is expected to hold the largest market share during the forecast period owing to increase in use of water treatment

Based on region, the global spiral membranes market is categorized into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. In 2020, Asia-Pacific held the largest market share in the spiral membranes market owing to the growing demand for water. Growing population rapid urbanization and their demand to water access is expected to drive the market growth during the forecast period. For instance, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) project, caters to the treatment of 17 new plants. The 17 STP (sewer treatment plants) are expected to incur a cost of Rs 1280.87 crore, including operation and maintenance (O&M) which is fixed at Rs 514.65 crore.

Additionally, North America is expected to hold the second largest market share during the forecast period. In Canada, the use of ultrafiltration is expected to drive the demand for spiral membranes. For instance, Ultrafiltration (UF) and Microfiltration (MF) are widely used technologies to standardize the protein content of cheese milk. Joyys is a Canadian milk company which uses ultrafiltration, as the ultrafiltration provides higher efficiency and has use of energy with the 0.1-µm MF SWM(spiral wound membrane).

COVID-19 Impact on the Spiral Membranes Market Analysis

Covid-19 did have a negative impact on the spiral membranes industry in 2020. The major application of spiral membranes is the water treatment industry. The lockdowns and the complete freeze in the supply chain refrained the trade activities. Water treatment plants, on the other hand, continued to operate. During the covid-19 outbreak, the market for materials used in spiral membranes was affected. Many significant water users have scaled back or reduced their activities, resulting in decreased industrial demand. A drop in demand from large industrial and commercial customers as a result of lockdowns and travel restrictions did drastically impact water utility earnings. Water treatment groups globally have implemented several measures. For example, e, a Chilean water provider, agreed with the government to delay water and sanitation fees for nearly half of its lowest consumers who consume up to 10 cubic meters per month during the "Declaration of Catastrophe." Furthermore, in Brazil, a water company announced rate exemptions for low-income homes for three months, a three-month delay in tariff adjustments, and the donation of water tanks to one of the largest informal settlements in its service region." This resulted in significant income losses for organizations. Therefore, the loss of water treatment industries is hampered the spiral membranes sales in 2020. However, gradual opening of facilities and growing urbanization is expected to boost the market growth during the forecast period.
